Celebrity Diamond Jewelry Blunders
We, as an audience, love to hear about celebrity fashions, trends and above all, celebrity exploits. By far, the most amusing celebrity blunders are the ones involving high-commodities and shiny substances such as diamond jewelry. In June 2009, actress Lindsay Lohan allegedly walked off the set of an Elle Magazine photo shoot with diamonds worth over $500,000. The missing diamonds disappeared around the time of Lohan’s departure from the Big Sky Studies, where the photo shoot was held. The actress was overheard asking if she could keep the expensive jewelry which included diamond earrings and a diamond necklace. The studio was forced to report the incident to the Scotland Yard when the jewelry was not recovered and Lohan’s representatives denied the actresses involvement, resulting in the local newspapers having a field day over the actress’s diamond exploits.
Lohan was previously accused of stealing merchandise from a 2007 Louis Vuitton photo shoot. A source claims that Lindsay walked off with expensive apparel used in the photo shoot. Lohan isn’t the only celebrity accused of stealing loaned diamond jewelry.
In 2008, Winona Ryder claimed to have ‘misplaced’ a $125,000 diamond encrusted bracelet which was loaned to her by Bulgari jewelers for a Marie Claire party. She says that she had lost track of the diamonds after handing them over to a hotel clerk for safe-keeping. Incidentally, the hotel has no record of the jewelry or of Ms. Ryder’s requests of safe-keeping.
Elizabeth Taylor reportedly misplaced her own 203.7 grain, pear-shaped pearl, the “La Peregrina.” The pearl was given to Mary Tudor, by her husband the King of Spain (the pearl later became part of the Spanish treasury). Eventually, the pearl was put up for auction, only to be purchased by Elizabeth Taylor in 1969. After acquiring the pearl, Taylor had it set into a Cartier necklace. At some point, during Taylor’s stay in Las Vegas, the pearl was found missing. Much to her relief, Taylor later discovered the pearl having been chewed on by her dog.
Marlene Dietrich, another famed Hollywood actress, reportedly baked a 37.5 carat diamond and emerald ring into a cake, only to have discovered it upon eating the dessert.
In conclusion, perhaps celebrities should keep a better watch on their precious gemstones, or, in the cases of Lindsay Lohan’s and Winona Ryder’s, keep away altogether.
