Golden Touch: Jeweler Makes the Mundane Magnificent

Everyone knows that mice like cheese and peanut butter, but apparently jewelry designer and diamond artist Sidney Mobell got wind that they like diamonds too! Or at least so it seems, with his spectacular and priceless 14 karat gold and diamond encrusted mouse trap with a diamond paved wedge of cheese.

For the San Francisco, California, based designer, standard diamond engagement rings and ruby earrings just didn’t suffice. After making run of the mill jewelry for decades, he decided to delve in new territory. His passion: transforming ordinary everyday objects into extraordinary works of art by recreating them out of priceless materials like gold, diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

It all started with a sardine can. The jeweler, who made jewelry for the rich and famous, was apparently bored one day. Using a regular sardine can as an example, he came out of his workshop at the end of the day with an 18-karat gold replica studded with 55 diamonds around the lid.

Inspired, he went on to create the solid gold mouse trap, then a diamond-studded cellular phone, a gold fishing reel set with 5.1 carats in diamonds, 253 rubies and 237 sapphires, and an 18 karat gold pacifier, encrusted with eight diamonds.
After the collection grew, he donated with jewel encrusted pieces to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History permanent collection of National Gems.

The collection went on tour this summer, including the Guinness World Record breaking gold and gem laden Monopoly game – the most expensive Monopoly game in the world. The board game weighs in at 32 pounds and is set with 60 diamonds, 24 rubies and 47 sapphires. The cards are plated with gold, and the playing tokens are molded from 18 karat gold. The numbers on the two rolling die are marked with diamonds.

All in all the game is valued at over $2,000,000. Anyone for a game of Monopoly?
