Christie's "Evening Star" Diamond Auction
On December 10, 2009, the renowned auction house known as Christie’s, held its annual ‘Magnificent Jewels from a Distinguished Private Collector’ auction. The auction was meant as a single owner collection 10 jewels sale – an exclusive private auction which consists of a small selection of rare, famous diamonds. The auction list includes, amongst others, the celebrated, stunning ‘Evening Star’ diamond. This amazing precious gemstone was reported to have been unearthed in the Indian Golconda mines. The ‘Evening Star’ is a whopping 39 carat, D colored, VVs1 clarity, IIa cut, pear shaped diamond. The diamond’s clear color, ideal cut, possibly flawless internal clarity, and large carat weight made it the center piece of the Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Auction. Naturally, the famous diamond comes with a GIA certification, authenticating its genuineness, as well as a detailed diagram which depicts the diamond’s unique properties.
The diamond was named the ‘Evening Star’ since, apparently, its former owner was in the habit of wearing the striking diamond, which was previously mounted on a platinum chain, set with sixty eight additional graduated pear-cut diamonds, to spectacular evening galas and glamorous nighttime affairs. Since then, the diamond was removed from the impressive diamond encrusted necklace, and both items were sold off separately in the Magnificent Jewels auction. The sixty eight pear shaped diamond necklace, which previously housed the ‘Evening Star’ diamond, is estimated at an approximate value of six thousand dollars, while the diamond itself is estimated at somewhere in the range of three and a half million dollars to five and a half million dollars.
In addition to the ‘Evening Star’ diamond and the sixty eight pear diamond platinum necklace, Christie’s is offering a matching pair of diamond stud earrings, mounted with two pear cut, D colored diamonds, with a total weight of twenty carats. The impressive diamond stud earrings are estimated at over two million dollars. As such, the entire diamond jewelry set (including the ‘Evening Star’ diamond, the matching platinum diamond necklace and diamond stud earrings) would cost over 8 million dollars to procure, a hefty price to pay, but well worth the cost of these gorgeous, one of a kind, diamond jewelry pieces.
Also up for auction are diamond jewelry items which include a Van Cleef and Arpels diamond encrusted tennis bracelet, a 37 carat, D colored, internally flawless, platinum diamond ring, valued at over 3 million dollars, and an amazing, and unusual, alexandrite set ring, which weighs in at over 3.5 carats.
