Exceptionally Large Diamond Found in South Africa’s Cullinan Mine
Over the years, the Cullinan mine, near Pretoria in South Africa, has bestowed many extraordinary diamond gifts upon the world, perhaps the most noteworthy until just recently was the Cullinan diamond found in 1905. The great thing about the Cullinan mine is that it just keeps on giving! Just 1 week ago a rough 507 ct (more than 100 g) white diamond was discovered at the Cullinan mine as well. According to reports from Petra Diamonds, the owners of the Cullinan mine, this specific diamond is one of the world’s twenty biggest diamonds ever!
Up until the year 2007, the Cullinan mine belonged to De Beers, one of the biggest names in certified diamonds, until it was acquired by Petra Diamonds, among the leading diamond mining firms in the world. Petra Diamonds verified that the diamonds were indeed discovered while mining through the enormous Cullinan mine. This magnificent diamond was found with 3 other precious diamonds that are bound to demand a high price in the diamond market. The carat weights of these diamond findings are as follows: 168 ct, 58.5 ct, and 53.3 ct.The Cullinan mine’s illustrious history includes some truly amazing discoveries. The Cullinan diamond discovered in 1905 by Frederick Wells was the biggest rough diamond ever found, coming in at a whopping 3,106 carats! After the spectacular diamond was initially polished, it was given to King Edward VII. The stunning diamond is part of the British crown jewels to this day. According to authorities in the industry of certified diamonds online, the Cullinan diamond is worth over 200 million GBP. This incredibly big diamond ranked as the largest diamond in the world until the year 1985 when the Golden Jubilee diamond was discovered in the Cullinan mine as well. Though the Golden Jubilee diamond wasn’t quite the size of the Cullinan diamond when it was first unearthed, once it was polished its carat weight (545 ct) outweighed that of the Cullinan diamond. Another notorious diamond found at the Cullinan mine is the Centenary diamond (599 ct rough). Less than a year ago, a flawless rare blue 7 ct diamond was found at the Cullinan mine and sold in Hong Kong for 6.2 million GBP.
Thus far, it has been said that the clarity and color of the newly found diamond are outstanding and chances are that it is a Type I stone. The diamond is still under examination so precise color grading and clarity have not been determined as of yet. Nonetheless, according to Johan Dippenaar of Petra Diamonds, the diamond’s color and clarity indicate that it will have amazing potential, particularly once it has been polished. The diamond industry is no doubt anxiously awaiting the results of analysis for this impressive diamond.
