My father owns a jewelry store, so I usually choose something from his shop whenever it's a friend's birthday. I just started dating someone (he's my first boyfriend :) ) and his birthday is coming up, and I desperately need some advice on what to get him. My father insists that all types of jewelry are great gifts for men, but I think he's so used to being a saleman that he doesn't even know what's true anymore.

Diamond watches make a great men's jewelry gift. If you're going to wear a watch, it might as well make a statement, and nothing says sophistication quite like a diamond watch. It seems to me that this is the type of men's jewelry that would speak to most men because it is such a functional diamond gift. Even a man that wouldn't dare wear a diamond necklace or diamond bracelet would most likely be more than happy to sport a diamond watch. However, this type of guy would probably prefer a more understated piece of diamond jewelry so it's important to just keep the specific man you are shopping for in mind. Then again, there are plenty of guys that just love diamond jewelry and wear even more than their spouses. For that type of guy, you can really go crazy with the jewelry shopping. Chances are, he'll be excited to receive any piece of jewelry, especially diamond jewelry.

If you ask them, most men will tell you that they prefer not to wear jewelry, let alone diamond jewelry. Most men consider diamond jewelry to be ostentatious, or perhaps feminine. However, there are some men that would like a little bling bling in their life, and wear diamond earnings, diamond vanity necklaces and diamond bracelets. If you're looking for a nice alternative for a low-key kind of guy you could go with an elegantly set, diamond watch. Also, some men may agree to wear diamond engagement or diamond encrusted eternity rings, due to their apparent symbolism.

It really depends on a number of factors. The individual himself, the societal pressures and environment that he exists in, and the cultural norms of the country that he is living in. Thus there is a wide range of of things that are so-called "appropriate".
