How do I know if my boyfriend is a diamond jewelry kinda guy? I'm considering buying him a diamond watch. What do you think?

My boyfriend and I have been dating for six months and I want to buy him a nice gift for Christmas. I thought of buying him men's diamond jewelry, but I don't know if he would like such a diamond gift. I don't want to ask him because I want it to be a surprise. The problem is I don't know if he doesn't own diamond jewelry because he can't afford it or because he just doesn't like it.

I say go for it, why not indulge him with a nice diamond gift?! Even if he'll get surprised at first, he's human enough to enjoy such a luxury, indulging gift, I'm sure.

If you aren't familiar with his taste in diamond jewelry,  or he doesn't have any family members or friends which can help you pick out diamond jewelry for him, then I would say you buy him a diamond jewelry gift that is rather manly, like an expensive rolex diamond watch or something more sport elegant.

Totally go for it! Every time my boy friend and I walk by a jewelry store, he starts to hum "cuz diamonds are a guy's best friend" in a Marilyn voice. He LOVES diamonds. I wish I could afford to buy him a diamond watch for Christmas. If you can, totally totally do it. Diamonds are everybody's best friend. Not just gals.

You said you don't know if he's cheap or not, but even if secretly he does like men's diamond jewelry, my guess is that he'll get rather embarrassed to receive such a gift and would enjoy it. A guy wouldn't want his girlfriend to buy him a present that he could never afford, that will hurt his ego.

If I were you, I would give up on the element of surprise and make sure I know what my boyfriend wants, otherwise you just might end up getting an unpleasant surprise on Christmas. Diamond jewelry isn't for everybody and if he could never afford to buy himself a diamond watch then his reaction to your gift could be one of the following:

  • He'll be blown away! He'll absolutely love the diamond watch and never take it off.
  • His ego will be totally bruised but he won't feel comfortable talking to you about it so every time looks down at his watch he'll feel like a loser.
  • He'll blow up in your face because he'll feel so uncomfortable with the fact that you bought him such an expensive diamond gift.
To make a long story short and save yourself a lot of trouble - just ask him!

You can't know for sure whether your guy will appreciate diamond jewelry or not, especially if you've never seen him wearing any. If you insist on buying him diamond  jewelry then perhaps you should play it safe by choosing men's jewelry that is plain banded (i.e. that isn't set with any gemstones or diamonds) or buying him jewelry that isn't necessarily made out of metal. Consider a nice leather banded bracelet or necklace. Also, an elegant watch could do the trick. Men don't really consider watches as jewelry, thus would have no problem wearing them. Pick something that isn't too flashy or eye-catching, like sport-elegant styled watches.
