Next month my wife and I will be celebrating three full years together. I noticed that she is wearing her engagement ring less and less, which makes me a bit sad. I think it's because she is worried about damaging it. Is it a good idea to get her a diamond ring guard? What is it exactly? Is it an ok gift?

A diamond ring guard is a shell that you can buy that frames a solitaire diamond ring, and can also "enhance" the original ring. The general idea of a diamond ring guard is simply to protect the ring. Many solitaire diamond engagement rings are very delicate, and have edges or showcase metals that can easily be scratched or damaged. Fragile prongs and other settings can also potentially be warped or twisted. A diamond ring guard is placed over the original ring and acts a barrier between the precious metals and gems and any hazardous elements. Diamond ring guards therefore help many people avoid costly repairs and replacements: especially those who feel like they are terrible at taking care of their valuable things. There are three different kind of diamond ring guards, though. Regular diamond ring guards are meant to be almost entirely for ring protection and aren't necessary stylized in any way. There are however, diamond ring enhancers, which are "accessories" that may or may not provide adequate ring protection, but add some flair and sometimes more diamonds, to the original ring. There are also diamond ring wraps which cover the entire diamond, but can leave the whole band unprotected.
Now, how are they connected to anniversaries? Well, they can be good anniversary presents if well-chosen. They not only remind your loved one of the engagement and wedding day, but also renew and "upgrade" the ring. It may very well be a good idea to get your wife a diamond ring guard, diamond ring enhancer or diamond ring wrap for your anniversary. Go to your local jeweler and ask what is offered, or take a look online and see what styles, materials, and designs you can dig up for diamond ring guards. You want your wife to not only feel comfortable wearing her diamond engagement ring without being worried that she'll damage it.
