I was looking through a catalog that we got in the mail that sells jewelry, and I started freaking out over the selection of diamond earrings. It's huge! What do I do???

That depends on your budget. If your budget is high you could obviously afford larger diamond. However, there are a few factors I would take into consideration when deciding on the diamonds' carat weight. For instance, if you are planning on buying your wife stud diamond earrings I would suggest going for a lower carat weight, since diamond studs are worn close to the earlobe, a larger diamond may be impractical and ungainly (and may make your wife's earlobe look huge!). If you are going with dangling diamond earrings and since dangling diamond earrings are often flashier and larger than studs, then larger carat weight diamond could look very complementary.

There really y isn't any written rule as to what carat a diamond set into earrings should be, it is a matter of personal taste. I would imagine that the size of the diamond you were planning on buying depends on the type of diamond earrings you were planning on getting your wife. If you're referring to diamond stud earrings then I personally would stick with diamonds which are between 1/2 carat and one carat. Since diamond stud earrings are meant to be a little more demure, and are designed to be worn close to the lobe I would recommend getting smaller sized diamonds. A large diamond set into stud earrings may look disproportionate. In my opinion, diamond stud earrings look best when they are understated and elegant. If you're planning on buying your wife dangling diamond earrings then you could opt for larger carat diamonds since dangling diamond earrings are designed to be a little flashier than diamond stud earrings. Dangling diamond earrings usually incorporate a multitude of diamonds into their settings, so you could chose to go with a large amount of small diamonds (ranging in carat between 0.25-1) or you may prefer buying earrings with a large diamond center stone, accented by slightly smaller diamonds.

The best place to look when considering buying a diamond gift for your wife is her jewelry box. Of course you don't want to get her a pair of diamond earrings that looks just like another pair of her earrings, but you should be able to get a sense of her style when you check out the jewelry she already has. Does she like to stand out with flashy jewelry and take fashion risks or is she more traditional in her style? If you still feel lost after you've had a look at her favorite pieces of jewelry, then I think it may be time to call for back up. Reach out to her sister, best friend, or mother and ask them what size and style of diamond earrings they think she would like. You can also buy her a pair of earrings from a jewelry store that offers a refund or store credit if the customer isn't fully satisfied with the piece of jewelry. If all else fails, you can present your wife with a lovely card where you tell her all about how hard you've tried to find her the perfect pair of diamond earrings but were afraid you'd make the wrong decision, then promise to take her diamond jewelry shopping and set a date to go shopping together!
