Such an important occasion deserves a special jewelry gift, and I've heard that some diamond jewelry items can be very suitable for serving as such a gift. Does someone have any recommendations about diamond jewelry gifts to celebrate this important stage in a child's life?

I think that almost any piece of respectful diamond jewelry would work as a communion gift. Are we walking about a boy or a girl here? I would say that boys probably prefer diamond encrusted watches or diamond cross pendants. Sometimes there are nice engraveable diamond ID tags and diamond ID-style bracelets that are also good options for a boy's communion gift. You could engrave these with the date of their communion and/or with an appropriate prayer. If you are discussing a gift for a girls communion, you could also consider a diamond cross pendant, but you might also want to consider a diamond bracelet, a diamond necklace or a pair of diamond stud earrings.

Some nice diamond jewelry gifts for a girl's communion are diamond rosary bracelets, heart-shaped diamond rings, heart-shaped diamond earrings, or a diamond heart necklace. For some unisex diamond gift options, you might want to consider a diamond cross, or a diamond communion medal/pendant. There are also some beautiful lockets that can be personalized or engraved and adorned with diamonds. I have a friend who gave her son a beautiful diamond wristwatch for his first communion, and another who opted for a diamond embedded and engraved silver cuff to give to her son for his first communion.
