Seeing as I am not completely educated about Jewish tradition, I wonder if there is something particular that is more traditional to give as a gift for a young girl on the occasion of her Bat Mitzvah celebrations.

Think of a Bat Mitzvah event as an extra special birthday party, with a religious twist to it. Therefore, if you think of it this way maybe you will find it easier to decide on a present. You could just as well buy her any sort of gift that would be appropriate as an ordinary birthday present. So to answer your question, if you would like to go for a nice jewelry present for her Bat Mitzvah, you could buy her really any kind of jewelry. It could be a nice necklace, a ring or a bracelet. In fact, jewelry is a very smart choice for a Bat Mitzvah present for actually two different reasons. The first is simply because jewelry is appreciated and loved by girls at all ages and I am sure she will really love receiving jewelry. But specifically, because Bat Mitzvah in essence celebrates a person's coming of age, jewelry could be extra appropriate in making the girl feel like a young woman. It is not mandatory, but it could also be a very good idea to buy your daughter's best friend a jewelry gift with a religious Jewish theme to it. For example, you could buy her a necklace with a pendant in the shape of the Star of David. There are many shops, especially in New York, that sell this kind of pendant so it will be really easy for you to find. To make it extra special, look for a star of david pendant that features encrusted gemstones within its outline. You will find that there a lot of striking Star of David pendants that actually feature real diamonds, but you could achieve the same effect by going for cubic zirconium instead. I am sure that jewelry in the form of a necklace featuring a star of david pendant will be the most appropriate gift you could get a 12 year old on the occasion of her Mat Mitzvah.

There is no jewelry item that is considered traditional to give as a Bat Mitzvah present. In fact, there is no other type of present which is considered traditional for this sort of event. Just choose a Bat Mitzvah present as you would if it were a normal birthday party. Seeing as it is your daughter's best friend, I wouldn't recommend giving her money for her party, which is somewhat common for these events. Indeed, buying her jewelry could be very appropriate. There are all sorts of Jewish oriented jewelry you could select from, which could be even more suitable for this sort of event. It shows that even though you are not Jewish, you appreciate their culture and tradition. Therefore I would suggest getting your daughter's best friend a necklace that features a star of David pendant or a hamsa hand pendant. The hamsa hand, if you are not familiar with the term, is a pendant in the shape of a hand that is said to protect against the "evil eye". It is very common for Jewish women to incorporate these hamsa hands into all sorts of jewelry items, including necklaces, bracelets and earrings. For young girls, they are also available in vibrant colors and encrusted with different gemstones. I would suggest looking through online Judaic websites to get a better idea of the different options available for you to choose from. By the way, keep in mind that a jewelry store gift card could also be a perfect solution for your dilemma, as it enables the girl to go and choose exactly what she wants. In either way, you shouldn't worry yourself too much about getting a present which is religiously appropriate, because at the end of the day it should be a gift that a teenager would love to receive.
