I would like to get my niece a special present for her upcoming 4th birthday, and I have diamond studs in mind. Before doing so, I would like to know what are the recommendations regarding children's diamond jewelry?

My niece recently got her ears pierced, and I thought it would be very appropriate to buy her a pair of diamond studs for her upcoming birthday. What are the basic guidelines for buying this sort of jewelry for someone who is so young in age?

When buying diamond jewelry for children, it is recommended to take several aspects into consideration, some of which I have listed below. You might have never considered these aspects if you were buying diamond jewelry for yourself, so it is important to have some sort of awareness when it comes to children's diamond jewelry. Due to the fact that diamonds are such an important and pricey purchase, you should take into account all the aspects listed below before buying your 4 year old niece a pair of diamond studs.

  • Choose an Appropriate Metal Setting: Whenever you buy children any sort of jewelry, whether it is a necklace, a bracelet or a pair of earrings (in your case), you must consider the type of metal setting being used. You should always go for the hypoallergenic metals when you purchase children's jewelry. Less sensitivity is associated with metal choices such as sterling silver, niobium or high karat gold. So you should definitely consider any one of these metals for your diamond stud setting choice.
  • Avoid Sharp Edges: You should always refrain from buying sharp edged jewelry pieces for children. It is hard enough for an adult to tolerate such inconvenience, so it is no wonder why it will be even worse for a child. Therefore, in terms of diamond studs, I would recommend going for a round shaped diamond rather than a square shaped diamond.
  • Purchase at a Reasonable Cost: It is often recommended to stick to a fairly reasonable price range when shopping for children's diamond jewelry. You must remember that because they are so young in age, they won't necessarily be able to appreciate the value of such an exquisite diamond piece, and thus might not give it the special care and attention as an adult would. Therefore, due to the fact that your niece is only 4 years old, I wouldn't personally recommend going overboard with your budget on this gift. Try to look for a pair of studs consisting of a smaller carat diamond so that if an unfortunate incident might occur you wouldn't feel too frantic about it.
