I want to buy a diamond for my mom, but I don’t know where to start. Please help!

My mother is turning 60 this year and my family and I want to buy her something very special. We had talked about buying a diamond ring, but it seems so cliché. What are some ideas for unique pieces? Does anyone know of any special pendants or charms for 60? I am really at a loss for ideas and would appreciate any help you can offer!

I think you would want to buy her either a necklace or a ring showcasing a precious stone. Precious stones like rubies, sapphires and emeralds are just as beautiful as diamonds. Some even argue that these stones offer a unique color and look that greatly complements the wearer's overall hue. Also called birthstones, each of these gems also hold a particular meaning. Here are my personal suggestions:

Ruby - The dark firey red gem also comes in a number of shades, ranging from near-burgundy to a pale pink. It is the birthstone for July and its astrological sign is Capricorn. If you want a stone with hardness comparable to a diamond, this is it.

Emerald - This brilliant transparent green gem traces its origins back to Egypt, Austria and Pakistan where was reputed to enhance clairvoyant powers and was also was known as the crowning jewel of Queen Cleopatra. It is the birthstone for the month of May and its sign is Taurus and Cancer.

Sapphire - This is by far, my most favorite. I often imagine it as the whole ocean compressed into a drop that can fit into one's hand. Although sapphires also come in other colors, the most sought after is the cornflower blue shade. It is the birthstone for the month of September and is said to symbolize happiness, serenity, and romance.
