I have wanted to get my nose pierced for some time now, but in the economic crisis I've found myself unemployed and job searching. Do piercings give an unprofessional impression? Should I lay off the piercings till I get a job, or should I just go ahead and do it for me since it's something I've wanted to do for a long time now?

Although I do thihnk that nose rings are generally more acceptedthese days, I would recommend that you wait unti you find a job. As much as people want to be "liberal" and not judge others, it is human nature and if you get someone interviewing you who is al older person, they may not hire you because they even though it is generally accepted, they are old fashioned. If you are desperate to find a job, you don't want to close doors to yourself just because of a piercing. The other thing that I find, is that depending on your age, if you are a younger person, I feel that we already have the deck stacked agtainst us. We are not as experienced as our older counterparts although we may be better and faster at our jobs. But having this nose ring may make you look even younger and inexperienced in their eyes.
if you absolutely have to get a piercing now, try a belly button ring. They are super sexy and maybe it will ease your need for a nose ring a bit before you can find a steady job.

This is a good question. If you are female, I would say that specifically in the case of a nose piercing, which is what you specified, you have less to worry about. In today's culture, the small stud nose piercing on women seems to be generally accepted. Many professional women sport them if they are small and inconspicuous. Now, if you are male it's a bit more problematic simply because the stud nose piercing is less popular among men. Most men who pierce their nose go straight for the hoop which is simply more noticeable. I would imagine that a nose piercing on a man would be a bit more controversial. Men simply don't seem to have as much fashion freedom in the workplace. Now, whether or not you are male or female, if we are talking about a barbel through your nostrils, or a large hoop and chain, these kinds of piercings will certainly impact the impression you give at job interviews most likely in a negative way. That is, unless you are applying for a job at some alternative music magazine or something. I would say that lip piercings and eyebrow piercings are also still considered to be alternative and may negatively impact your overall reception at job interviews.

As someone working in the corporate world I would have to say that body piercings do run a fine line between ok and totally unprofessional. Now I’ve seen many different kinds of body piercings from tiny, tiny diamond stud nose piercings to gigantic holes in ears. While I personally think something understated, like the barely-there diamond, gold or silver stud nose piercing, might be o.k., you still run the risk of not being taken seriously. Of course it depends on what type of industry and office environment you are working in, for instance in any given advertising or creative firm you will most likely see folks with multiple piercings, tattoos and other such effects. But if you are working in a place like a law firm, or in sales you might have a harder time. Don’t forget you are a representative of your company and your clients. It might not be appropriate to show up in court or to a sales call with diamond piercings on your face. And there is a double standard. While diamond earrings or gold necklaces might look great on a woman, they might be terribly out of place on a man, making him look equally as unprofessional. Men should it keep a bit more understated. Watches are a great way to add style to your look without overdoing it. And if there is every a question of what is or is not unprofessional, remember that most often you can take out your piercing. Another great option is to forget that cute little diamond nose ring you always wanted and opt for something a little bit more…racy. There are, as I recall, a few other places on the human body to get pierced. I’ve seen some really beautiful diamond and silver navel piercings that, guess what, no one will see during working hours. When in doubt, air on the safe side and get something that is small and removable or don’t get anything at all.

Hey you could always wear a belly button ring or a nipple ring instead. No one will be able to see those while you're at work, they'll be hidden under your clothes. When it comes to nose rings, I think it depends on where you work and if it's a casual work environment or not. I think that it would be safest to steer clear of nose rings, eyebrow rings or tongue rings when at work altogether, but that's just me.
