yes... but over the years, enamel finished boxes were much more durable than those made out of sliver or gold... and the boxes were decorated or finished with a range of materials, for example, pompean gold or roman gold or even something called french bronze... also, parsian silver.

in terms of the production of jewelry boxes... the most commonly used base metal (at least used to be...) was antimonial lead. back in the day, the boxes they were elcetro plated with a kind of copper metal and then topped with silver or sometimes gold.

in the earlier part of the century, also art nouveau was increasingly popular and a lot of the jewlery boxes were being designed as such... basically the boxes had a lot of flowing lines that were often asymmetrical and contained designs related to nature. a lot of flowers, basically. like for example, they had 4 leaf clovers or daisies or roses... and they each represented something else, like good luck or beauty, love or innocence.

i really don't know anything about the jewelry industry or the history. i have a few jewelry boxes at home that my husband bought me but i don't even know to tell you where i bought them. i guess it's a pretty established and long running industry though... since practically every woman i know owns a jewelry box and almost every man buys his woman a jewelry box :) haha. seriously though, it's really interesting to read what the other people on here write and surprising how knowledgable everyone on here is about the history and industry of jewelry boxes. i think that it's a really interesting question and i hope to continue reading more and more of these kinds of responses! good luck.

i also have a little bit of history on this... i know that in the earlier part of the 20th century, stay at home moms were getting catalogues in their mailboxes from department stores and such. when they'd go through the catalogues they received, and could actually afford to buy jewlery boxes, they would purchase them - regardless of their size or design. and in fact, they did come in a range of sizes and designs.

i'm not sure about the jewelry box industry but i know a little bit about the history of jewelry boxes. for a few hundred years, jelwry boxes were made by artisans and were created out of precious materials, basically as elegant as the things that they held in their case. and it was at the time of the industrial revolution, that the idea of producing masses of boxes at a time, allowed the mid-class of society to buy stuff such as jewelry boxes, and other things that were considered to be luxury at the time. since the jewlery boxes were produced in masses, the money that it cost to make them, in addition to the price to the consumer was a lot less. so what happened was that what was previously thought to be luxurious, was not being used by everyone.
