My mother just passed down her diamond necklace to my 10 year old daughter. Can she store it in her plastic jewelry box with her other jewelry?

I don't know much about diamonds or diamond jewelry since I rarely wear jewelry...does anyone know if I can let my daughter out this beautiful necklace with her other jewelry in her plastic barbie jewelry box?

Definitely NOT! I would even recommend that you store them and watch over them for her. Diamond jewelry should always be stored very carefully in a cloth or velvet-lined box or pouch. If I were you, I'd go out and buy a separate box specifically for this piece of jewelry. Then you will ensure that the diamond won't scratch other pieces, that the necklace itself is protected, and that it wont get tangled up with your daughter's fashion jewelry or what have you. If she wears the jewelry, always make sure she puts it back in its special case right when she gets home. This is a piece that she can't take off and hand to you to place in your purse if it starts feeling uncomfortable. I would explain to her that diamond jewelry is very precious and needs special care and protection. It is also a very special thing that she got such a valuable gift from her grandmother. This is not just regular jewelry.

Never put diamond jewelry in a plastic box. Not only can precious metal be scratched by plastic, but diamonds can damage and be damaged very easily by the plastic. It is also not recommended to place diamond jewelry in any compartment or container that might get humid. Humidity is known to damage fine and precious jewelry by warping it. Plastic is known to hold in moisture. This is definitely a no no!
