I always loved to put on the costume jewelry back stage during plays in high school – such fun! Costume jewelry goes back about 300 years. In the 1700’s costume jewelry was pretty cheap and mostly made from glass. It wasn’t until the 1800’s did costume jewelry start to incorporate semi-precious materials in to designs. Now, the mid 20th century is when costume jewelry really had its hay day. In the 1930’s costume jewelry, also called fashion jewelry, was used primarily as a cheap accessory to a specific outfit or costume as they were called. Unlike precious jewelry, like diamonds or gold, which is often bought as an investment, costume jewelry was meant for fashion purposes only. There were also different periods for costume jewelry:

  • Art Deco from the 1920’s to the 1930’s
  • The Retro Period from 1935 to 1950
  • Art Modern from 1945 to 1960
But costume jewelry is apparently still alive and kicking. Not sure if you know who Molly Sims is, she is a model and actress, most recently appearing on the T.V. series, Casino, but just launched her own line of costume jewelry.
