Is costume jewelry and fashion jewelry the same thing?

Fashion jewelry and costume jewelry are often used interchangeably and refer to jewelry that is not made from precious materials like diamonds or pearls, or silver or gold. Back in the day, fashion jewelry was used as a cheap way to accessorize a particular outfit, or costumes as they were called - hence the name costume jewelry. Now a days fashion jewelry is really quite beautiful and often adorned with diamond like stones.

I read somewhere that it IS the same thing. I think on the internet I read that. It is also true that fashion jewelry was used to supplement outfits, like in a costume-type of way... and that's where it got the name costume jewelry. So if you hear it used interchangeably, you'll know why :)
