My boyfriend got me a gold engagement ring. He insists it's real gold but the ring keeps turning my finger green. Why?

The gold engagement ring is set with three diamonds: one large diamond in the center flanked by two smaller diamonds on either side. I couldn't be allergic to the diamonds, could I? Gosh, that would be upsetting.

Your boyfriend is either lying or he was cheated. The best thing to do is go to a jeweler and have them take a look at it. They will be able to tell you if its real or not.

A lot of people are allergic to nickel. Maybe the gold was mixed with some of the nickel and that is what is causing the reaction.

It could also be that the gold is mixed with a large variety of other metal alloys such as copper, rhodium, aluminum, etc. Is the gold band a deep yellow hue or is it faint yellow? The yellower the gold the purer it is. If your engagement ring is intensely yellow in color then there should be no reason why it would turn your finger green. If it does then it may very well not be gold at all but a cheap metal alloy meant to mimic gold. If, however, the band is a faint yellow color, then the gold is less pure (i.e. it is mixed with other metals), but it is still real gold. Impure, low karat gold, may very well color your finger green, but that does not necessarily mean that the gold is fake.

The engagement ring is most likely fake gold. This doesn't mean that your boyfriend is lying to you- it could just mean he was duped. The best thing to do would be to take your engagement ring to a jeweler and have it appraised. The jeweler would be able to tell you if your engagement ring is fake gold or if it real gold and just has a low K weight. Some people are allergic to gold mixed with too much copper or nickel.

By the way, I've never heard of anyone being allergic to diamonds. I don't think it's possible to be allergic to diamonds, but don't quote me on that.

This could happen (although very rarely) also with real gold. It could be the copper or other elements that somehow react with your skin, it could be an allergy. Take your engagement ring to a jewelry shop and inquire about the metals that it's made of. If it is real gold, I'd recommend you go to a dermatologist.
