I have a few loose diamonds, and I would like to mount them into jewelry. I was thinking of setting them in a silver necklace. Before taking my loose diamonds to be mounted onto a silver necklace, I would like to know if this sort of thing is even possible.

Though diamonds can be set into silver jewelry, I wouldn't suggest it. The tarnish that builds up on a piece of silver jewelry just isn't worth the work. If you want to choose a precious metal that has a look that's similar to that of silver, you might want to try white gold or platinum. These precious metals may be more expensive than silver, but you won't have to worry about tough cleaning. My first choice would be platinum because it's even more durable and dense than gold. It also secures loose diamonds better than gold since it's a less pliable precious metal. In addition, platinum is hypoallergenic and it gets to be even lovelier over time since it develops a beautiful sheen.

Yes they most certainly can. In fact, silver jewelry can be set not only with diamonds, but also with a myriad of precious and semi-precious gemstones (such as emeralds, rubies, sapphires, garnets, turquoise, onyx, topaz, etc.). Silver jewelry is usually not set with diamonds for one main reason: silver and silver jewelry has always been considered as less valuable than gold, platinum or even titanium. Silver can be found in relative abundance, thus it is not thought to be as unique or as luxurious as say gold, which is a rarer substance, which is relatively hard to find. Also, silver jewelry s easy to tarnish and hard to properly clean, thus a lot of jewelers would hesitate to set precious gemstones and diamonds into this precious metal. Many jewelry owners find it hard to clean silver jewelry without damaging the precious gemstones set into its structure. However, if your heart is set on diamond set silver jewelry, you could probably find a large array of diamond encrusted silver jewelry in the form of rings, pendants, necklaces, brooches, earrings and bracelets online or in specialized silver jewelry stores.
