How do I know if a charm is an authentic British vintage charm?

I was given a vintage charm bracelet by my great aunt, who grew up in the United Kingdom during her earlier years. She says she can't remember where she got the charm bracelet, but that she's had it for decades. I suspect that it is a British vintage charm.

This can be a tricky question to answer, but there are a few things you can look for. To find out whether the vintage charm you are holding or considering purchasing is an authentic British charm, look for the 925 hallmark. If the piece of jewelry reads 925, then it is definitely not a British charm. In the United States and Scandinavia, the 925 hallmark has been in use from the 1930's onwards. It has also been used in Thailand since the 1980's, but it has not been used in the UK. Many British vintage charms are either marked "sil" or "silver", or they are not marked at all. It is not required by law for jewelry weighing less than 7.8 grams to be hallmarked. Actually, European charms sometimes have the 800 hallmark, meaning that the piece of jewelry is of a lower rank of silver. One more way to determine whether a charm is an authentic British vintage charm is by evaluating its level of tarnish and wear and tear. Any charm in mint condition most likely isn't really a vintage charm at all. Nonetheless, one must keep in mind that the charm could have been cleaned. Take my advice – when in doubt, ask! Especially when purchasing a vintage charm online, make sure to read the descriptions with great care. Sometimes what appears to be a vintage charm can turn out to be a charm that was copied or molded to appear to be a vintage charm. If you wind up with one of these charms, in the best case scenario the charm is well made but not as intricate as the vintage charm it has come to imitate. The worst case scenario is that the details are all wrong and that the rims are distorted. So keep your eyes open, read descriptions carefully and ask questions.
