My family is Indian and we have a tradition of wearing earrings in both ears. I seldom wear my earring in the US, though I would like to wear earrings for special occasions. What should I do: Wear only heavy or light earrings? Can I wear my earring to my work place? How weird would I considered to be if I wear the earrings more often?

As much as we would like to believe that America is the tolerance capital of the world, in reality people aren't always as tolerant as we would like them to be. While I would love to tell you that you should just wear whatever you want (jewelry and otherwise), this might have a negative effect on the way that people perceive you in the workplace and I don't know if that would be worth it. I think you should definitely wear your earrings to special occasions, but if you're going to wear earrings to work, I would suggest a single diamond stud instead of a full pair.

Unfortunately even if they pretend to be, people aren't quite as tolerant of foreign fashions and cultures as they should be. And office employees are always on the prowl for reasons to snicker behind their co-workers back - so if it's important for you to be accepted as an equal by your colleagues, I'd say keep the earrings for special traditional occasions with family and relatives who won't misread the fashion statement. But, if you want to make a statement that you don't care what people think about you or declare you cultural pride, then go for the earrings - maybe if more people insisted on stuff like that there would be more tolerance and open-mindedness in the world.

It's not the uncommon for guys to wear earrings. I don't know where you live in the US, but in most modern towns men's earring aren't so uncommon. Furthermore, people should understand that you come from a different culture. No need to abandon you tradition, in the worst case scenario your earrings will be eye catching for a while, arousing people's curiosity, but you should get used to it soon enough.

If you want my honest opinion, I think that earrings for men are extremely weird! Whenever I see a guy wearing one earring on his ear (or worse yet – even an earring on each ear), I can't help but feel appalled by it. Let's face it – earrings simply look better and more appropriate on women. Whenever I see a man wearing earrings, I immediately start to think whether he is gay. Call me old fashioned, but that is how I feel about this whole issue. Guys getting their ears pierced was a big hit in the 90's, and I can only hope that this trend stays in that era and doesn't come back to haunt us!
