Can you 'whiten' silver jewelry?

I would like to know if it's possible to make silver jewelry whiter, or shinier. And if so, how could I do this without harming my silver jewelry?

If you mean, how can you make your silver jewelry shinier then the best way would be to take the item to your local jeweler and have him professionally clean the silver. He can buff out any scratches or dents present on the surface of the silver, as well as polish out stain and tarnish. You could clean your silver jewelry at home using household items. For instance, use a soft bristled toothbrush and mild toothpaste to polish your silver jewelry. Or, you could try soaking your silver jewelry in warm, soapy water. Just make sure that after you rinse your silver jewelry off, to dry the item off completely with 100% cotton fabric, or a similar soft piece of cloth. Keep in mind, silver jewelry can tarnish easily, especially when exposed to fresh air or to humidity for a prolonged amount of time. Therefore, it is extremely important for you to clean and care for your silver jewelry and to store it properly, so as to avoid irreversible damage and discoloration. Also, if you're still not pleased with the resulting shiny effect, consider plating your silver jewelry with a thin coat of rhodium. Rhodium plating protect the silver jewelry from possible corrosion, as well as adds to the silver's natural luster and elegant appearance.

Another way to whiten your jewelry is to take a toothbrush and some good toothpaste and then brush brush and rinse it with water and your silver toned jewelry will most likely shine. If you get your hands in water with bleach your ring will turn dark and tarnished. This method will clean your jewelry quickly and effectively.
