My boyfriend bought me a ruby ring and I don't know how to clean it!

I wore this new ruby ring to my friend's party and I got it all dirty. I need a way to clean the ruby fast! What is the best way to care for my ruby jewelry?

I've been working in the jewelry business for 20 years now and I have found that the best way to clean all precious gemstone jewelry is by using a simple solution of warm soapy water. This goes for ruby jewelry, sapphire jewelry, diamond jewelry, emerald jewelry, you name it.

Having collected ruby earrings for years, I know that you can also take a toothbrush to your ruby jewelry and use it to remove small particles of dirt and crud from the stone or setting. Don't brush too hard, though. It might scratch the setting if the setting is 18 karat gold or 24 karat gold.

I actually work in chemistry and I know that many women use ammonia and water to clean their ruby jewelry. However! Beware. You must make sure to wash the jewelry very thoroughly after using such a solution. Otherwise you may damage your skin and cause further damage to your fine jewelry.
