The thing that bothers me most about diamonds is that they always come in similar shapes, and although they are very pretty they have something very non-personal about them. Ordering a custom cut diamond might be the solution for this problem. What is exactly a custom cut diamond (do I have complete control on how a diamond is shaped)? Where can I order such a diamond and is it affordable?

Custom cut diamonds are diamonds which are shaped and faceted to resemble a unique and unusual shape. Generally speaking, diamonds can be cut into almost any shape if there is enough rough material to work with. Diamonds are shaped by their facets, which are placed strategically so as to give the diamond its singular form, as well as enhance its natural brilliance and fire. By shifting the facets, a diamond cutter can create the illusion of different shaped diamonds. For instance, the Hearts and Arrows diamond cut is an incredibly beautiful and unusual diamond cut. The deliberately placed facets, cut into the diamond's crown, create the illusion of 8 grey arrowheads which seem to be present within the diamond's structure. Custom cut diamonds can be ordered from expert diamond cutters, which specialize in the different modern diamond cuts. The truly complex cuts take years and even decades to develop. These intricate diamond shapes are considered especially rare and quite valuable. Diamonds with specialized cuts have become an exceptionally popular trend. In fact, many celebrities, movie stars, rappers and socialites have been photographed sporting custom cut diamond jewelry including custom diamond engagement ring, unique cut diamond earrings and unusual shaped diamond tennis bracelets. Custom shaped diamonds come in virtually any shape imaginable (including star shaped diamonds, heart diamonds, beetle shaped diamonds, triangular diamonds, fire rose cut diamonds, sunburst diamonds, butterfly shaped diamonds, etc.). You most certainly can set a custom cut diamond in an engagement ring (in fact, that is the most common use for these unique diamonds). You would probably need to have your engagement ring custom made, and that its settings be specifically designed to accommodate these unique creations. Ask your jeweler which settings would be most appropriate for the diamond shape of your choice. However, you should be aware that custom cut diamonds and custom made engagement rings can be extremely pricy. Before you order your custom cut diamond, make sure that your budget allows for it.
