With the recession, a lot of my friends and their spouses lost their jobs and really had to tighten their belts. Since I know they're having a hard time, i don't want to rub it in their faces by showing up to book club with whopper diamond earrings. That would really embarrass me. What to do?

Technically, you can easily get diamonds made smaller. A professional diamond cutter can shave the 1 carat diamonds down to a smaller size. However, it's kind of a real waste of 1 carat diamonds, and it costs a pretty penny to have the diamonds recut. The 1/2 carat that you'd shave off would just go into the garbage, and that sounds like a real waste to me. I mean, your friends are eating grits for dinner, and you're throwing away diamonds?? Does that sound right to you? If you feel the 2 carat diamond earrings are too extravagant for you right now, why don't you bring them back to the store and exchange them for stud earrings set with smaller diamonds? That way you actually are being thrifty, instead of just pretending to be. Plus, you are better off exchanging the diamond earrings for a pair that you will actually wear, than letting such expensive diamond jewelry live forever stowed away in your jewelry box. That would be a real shame.

I wouldn't recommend you have your diamonds cut down to a smaller carat size. Besides it being a waste of diamond matter, it would cost you a pretty penny to hire a professional diamond cutter to do the work for you. Have you considered re-setting the diamonds in different jewelry? If it bothers you to wear such large diamond stud earrings, then perhaps you should try having the diamonds removed and re-set into a diamond pendant or a diamond ring. You may find that the diamonds don't look as big when they are mounted into a different setting or into different types of jewelry.

Girl, you're off your rocker. Just because your friends are going through a rough patch doesn't mean that you can't be beautiful. How many gifts of 2 carat diamond earrings do you get in a lifetime? Your husband wanted you to have the earrings and he wants you to wear them too. So do yourself a favor and patch up your bleeding heart, and wear the diamond studs proudly. You deserve it.
