My grandmother has a pair of special earrings that she says she'll give me when I turn 21. She always says that they are Swarovski crystal, and I was just wondering what's so special about the fact that it's Swarovski??

It isn't really the crystal itself, although I'm sure the earrings are beautiful and special, but the name that makes it special. In 1892 Daniel Swarovski, who was from what is now the Czech Republic, invented the first electric machine for cutting glass into crystal, and the company that resulted from that first invention is the oldest large-scale crystal manufacturing company in the world. So with history and respect comes a sense of uniqueness, I guess! Something else interesting is the fact that in 2004 the Swarovski company created a 9 foot long start that has been featured on the christmas tree in Rockefeller center every year since!
