Selling heirloom jewelry

My grandmother left me a whole bunch of jewelry when she passed away a couple of years ago. She had a collection of gold jewelry, a ruby necklace, a diamond engagement ring etc... I really don't have much of a use for it and am interested in selling it. However I do not want to get ripped off by a pawn shop or those stores that buy used jewelry at shitty prices. Does anyone have a recommendation of where I can get the most value?

I personally think that eBay sucks when it comes to selling jewelry online. People go to eBay looking for bargains and the jewelry there is sold at minimal prices. I think you're better off having a garage sale than selling your jewelry items on eBay... :-)

I would recommend that you consign your jewelry to an experienced ebay seller with a store. This way you would have control over the pricing and not be at the mercy of an auction. If the pieces are high end, I've found you can get better than half their value with the right picture and description. Hope this helps. pinkies_stuff on ebay

If you need to sell used jewelry you should know that you will never get the value that was paid for it. However in order to minimize the damage I would first get an appraisal if this is a large amount of jewelry, and then clean up the jewelry and try to make it look as new as possible. Imagine you were selling a house or a car- if it is presented as run down and dirty that will be reflected in the offer that you will get. Even though it will probably be melted down anyway, it makes a difference.

Now for the bad news- although pawn shops and all of those advertisements that you see that offer to buy used jewelry aren't ideal, they are really the only places that will agree to buy the jewelry, and you shouldn't expect to get more than 50% of what it's really worth. Your only other option is e bay or sites like craigslist, but they are relatively complicated options.
