I know that engagement rings and wedding rings typically have a specific style or look: engagement rings usually feature once centerpiece diamond, and wedding rings are usually a plain gold or platinum band. What about divorce rings?

Divorce rings have a very specific look to them that memorializes the previous marriage and symbolizes the separation. The most basic divorce ring design is a plain metal band, similar to a wedding band, that features a break, or space, in the center, where a centerpiece diamond on a diamond engagement ring might sit. The break, of course, not only represents the absence of the engagement ring diamond, but also represents separation and divorce. A more modern version of the ring, designed by Harold Thompson, incorporates three stripes of white gold: one to represent the date you met your ex, one to represent the date you married your ex, and one to represent the date of your divorce. Of course, the type of metals can be mixed and matched, and altered. I have seen white gold rings with yellow gold stripes, and titanium rings with black diamond stripes. Some of the rings even incorporate diamonds. I have also come across rings that look like the break is laced together with thin strips of metal. These are for those divorces who want to find healing strength in their divorce ring. The basic design makes it easy to customize. The design is at once practical and imbued with meaning. It's simplicity makes it perfect for a ring that will be worn every day with every outfit and its deep symbolism makes it meaningful to its wearer.

I think that it's really up to you what design or look your divorce ring has. There are a number of different designs out there, but this is a very personal ring which is supposed to symbolize something that only you can understand completely. Go ahead and pick out a ring that seems to embody the emotions that you want it to. Or, create your own design and have it made by a custom jeweler.

While the traditional divorce ring is quite simple, involving only a plain band with a space, or notch, in it, Gisele Ganne, a young jewelry designer, has already made a big splash with her collection of ornate designer divorce jewelry. Her collection includes large yellow gold rings that slide onto four fingers, and are decorated with Victorian style floral motifs and large bird skulls and deep red and blue gemstones and ceramic flowers. She creates her divorce jewelry to express her belief that She stated "Mourning is not just about dead people, it is also about dead relationships and decaying marriages."
