Why do people wear divorce rings?

I just read an article about the growing popularity of divorce rings, but I can't seem to wrap my head around the whole idea. Why would anyone wear a divorce ring? It seems so weird?

Well, I think that above all they want to show the world that they are completely happy with the decision they had to get divorced. I guess they want to show the world that they have emerged stronger and more determined. Maybe it's even part of getting to grips with their new reality of their recently established marital status. I can only imagine the way it feels for them to constantly be reminded of their divorce by looking at their divorce ring all day long. It must be hard, I don't think I would have the heart to do it if the tables were turned. I honestly feel as puzzled as you are.

To tell you the truth, I really don't get the whole "divorce ring" thing. I always thought that when you get divorced you take off and get rid of all of the jewelry that they make you buy when you get engaged and married. The bare-handed look already represents "not married" right? So, why go around with a ring that says you are divorced? But, these days people will try to sell you anything in order to make some money, and some people buy it. In the end of things, if it makes you feel good, then, well, what the heck. You may as well go ahead and indulge yourself.

There are many reasons that someone might want to wear a divorce ring. To begin with, jewelry has been used by man for thousands and thousands of years to symbolize everything from social status to personal character. Many cultures believe that jewelry has healing power, especially when set with specific precious stones or fashioned out of certain precious metals. Man can gain strength from symbolic jewelry- it is a constant reminder when they see it, feel it, take it on and take it off. For most divorce's, the entire divorce process is very difficult. In a way, they go through a mourning process: mourning the death of the relationship. Wearing a divorce ring, or turning their old wedding ring into a divorce ring, can allow them to feel that they can still appreciate their previous marriage and at the same time appreciate the fact that it ended and that they are moving on. The divorce ring is also a way for them to express their divorced status to the world without having to bring it up in conversation. When someone sees the ring on their finger, it's clear that the wearer is divorced.
