This guy who comes up in all of your google searches is actually the modern divorce ring pioneer. While there were women and men who would intentionally buy a ring after divorce to symbolize the experience, there was never an iconic divorce ring as there is today. Harold Thompson had been married twice, and divorced twice. Bu 2001 he was in a pretty low place. He just got laid off from his job and was working at Wal Mart to make rent and pay the bills. A former co-worker of his at his old job, Mary Burden, ran into him when he was at work at Wal Mart and they got to talking about divorce and unemployment. Burden mentoned to Thompson that she always thought a divorce ring would be a good idea- that there were wedding rings, promise rings, journey rings, eternity rings, engagement rings and anniversary rings, but there was nothing to commemorate a divorce. After musing on this, Thompson came up with the idea to design a ring with a break in it with three lines on the side to symbolize the ex- one to symbolize the day you met, one symbolizing the day you married and the last symbolizing the divorce. Once he drafted a real blue-print and settled on a specific design, he called a friend of his who worked in the jewelry business and had him make a prototype. This was the beginning of Thompson and Burden's business. Soon enough they created a website where they sold their divorce rings and it caught on. We'll see what they have in store next!
