What is Eco-Friendly Jewelry after all?

I keep hearing this "eco-friendly jewelry" term but I don't understand exactly what it means. Does eco-friendly jewelry mean jewelry which all of it's particles weren't mined or produced while harming the environment (for example, a eco-friendly gold diamond ring is a ring in which the gold and the diamond were both mined in a manner creating minimum damage to the environment)? Or does eco-friendly jewelry only contain substances that aren't normally associated with environmental damage?

Eco-friendly jewelry would be jewelry that is conflict free both on how the gold is obtained and worked and how the diamonds are obtained and worked. Diamonds should be certified and go through the Kimberly Process.

Eco-friendly jewelry is basically jewelry which is made of old gemstones and precious metals which have been previously used for other purposes. Such metals, for example, can be melted down and then reused for creating the base of a new jewelry item. Gemstones, on the other hand, can be recycled quite easily, sometimes by a simple polish, removing small imperfections that the gem has obtained throughout the years. Besides this motif of recycling which characterizes a big proportion of the eco-friendly jewelry nowadays. Furthermore, eco-friendly jewelry also include synthetic metals and gemstones which have been produced from particles which are all, you guessed right, eco-friendly as well.

Eco-friendly jewelry is a lot about creativity, the ability to take a metal, melt it down and use it to create something new. Or to take an old gemstone which has been used in a vintage jewelry item and find a new more modern destiny for it. Besides the environmental aspect of recycling and using eco friendly products I find another artistic aspect, which has to do with keeping old products alive, respecting our ancestors tradition by not throwing away old items but giving them a new meaning, appropriate of a newer generation. Eco friendly isn't only about the environment, it's also a more healthy attitude towards merchandise and products, not looking to obtain more and more items and always aiming for the newest item available, but actually cherishing what we have, being creative and initiative, taking what we already possess and find new ways to use it for our advantage.

Eco friendly clothes, eco friendly milk, eco friendly chairs, eco friendly jewelry, it seems we have all suddenly become eco friendly crazy. Maybe it's the guilt of exhausting our environment for so many years or maybe it's just a new fashion that everybody is feeling the need to join. I don't know if this eco friendly trend will last long, obviously it's hypocritical to some extent, but perhaps it's better than not being eco friendly at all. Metals like silver, gold and platinum are especially popular throughout the US, but are also quite demanded in other parts of the world. Such metals (along with many other metals which are more popular in certain countries) cannot be obtained easily, but only through extensive mining which inevitably harms the environment quite significantly. And then we have diamonds and gemstones. Mining for diamonds in most cases is more eco friendly than gold mining but is still a process which include setting up mines, and basically clearing up the organisms of an entire are in which diamonds are found. So I would say that producing and purchasing eco friendly jewelry has two main purposes: The first is recycling jewelry materials so less new jewelry particles would be created and less products will later on be decomposed and harm the environment in several ways. The second is preventing the continuous excessive mining projects of both diamonds and metals, projects which as I've stated aren't very eco friendly.
