I've seen a number of jewelry websites and jewelry companies claim to have jewelry that is "ethically sourced" and made from "fair trade" materials. What exactly does that mean?

Ethical sourcing and fair trade refers to the methods used to obtain/purchase/trade materials used to make these companies jewelry. It is well known that mining can seriously damage the environment, can negatively impact a local community and at times can involve the exploitation of workers and their rights. A company that advertises the use of ethically sourced and fair trade materials most likely buys gemstones, precious metals and other elements that originate only from mines that pledge to uphold workers rights, to ensure environmental standards and to preserve local communities. Frequently these companies also strive to work with renewable and recycled/recyclable materials. In addition, their jewelry makers and craftsmen are typically well cared for, fashion their jewelry by hand, and receive good benefits. As you can see, Ethical Sourcing and Fair Trade are both wonderful initiatives that I fully support. These days you can find all different styles and types of jewelry that are made from ethically sourced and fair traded metals, diamonds, gemstones and more. When you are buying jewelry, try to make a point of going to retailers that proudly advertise their eco-friendly policies.
