My boyfriend proposed about a month ago and he bought me this unusual diamond engagement ring. It was set with what looked like gravel, but he told me it's a rough diamond. How can I tell if it's a real diamond and how can I find how much the diamond worth? Should I keep it or exchange it for a more conventional diamond engagement ring?

First of all, your boyfriend could have very well been telling the truth. Traditionally, rough diamonds were never used in jewelry and ornamental or decorative items. Unpolished diamonds were considered unappealing since they were covered with rough matter which muted their brilliance, and frankly made them look rather plain (just like you said, 'gravel'). However, these days, rough diamonds have been gaining in popularity (maybe it has to do with the whole eco trend or maybe it has to do with their affordability) and jewelers and designers have started incorporating these uncut, unpolished diamonds in their jewelry. If you're unsure as to whether the stone set in your engagement ring is genuinely a rough diamond then I suggest taking the ring to a local jeweler and having him inspect the ring for you. He'll be able to tell you whether the diamond is real or whether it is a fake. Have your diamond engagement ring appraised. An appraiser will not only be able to tell you whether the diamond is authentic, but he'll also be able to estimate the diamond's value. I recommend you look online for a local appraiser who has some experience with rough diamonds, since as I've already noted, rough diamonds are a new trend when it comes to diamond jewelry. An appraiser that has never dealt with rough diamonds may have trouble accurately appraising your engagement ring.

Really?? Your boyfriend bought you an engagement ring set with a rough diamond? How's that working out for you? I think it's an incredibly unique idea, to take traditional jewelry like engagement rings and add a little twist to them by using rough diamonds. Do You like your ring? Does the stone look gorgeous? I know that a lot of women prefer a more conventional diamond engagement ring but I personally think that my lady would prefer a ring that's a little more interesting and a little more unconventional (when I finally get around to proposing that is…). I think you should definitely keep the ring!

Hmmm, I don't know about that… a rough diamond engagement ring? I mean, when I dreamt about my engagement ring, I always pictured it having a large, beautiful sparkling diamond. A rough diamond just seems so pedestrian to me…maybe you should reconsider exchanging the ring…Think about it. Are you happy with wearing that ring on your finger for the rest of your life?
