Is rough diamond jewelry offensive?

For our last anniversary I bought my girlfriend rough diamond stud earrings. The jeweler told me that rough diamond jewelry was very 'in' right now so I thought she'd absolutely love them. But when I gave them to her she got very offended and said that the earrings weren't 'real' diamonds. Why was she so offended??

Maybe she took offense because of the whole 'diamonds in the rough' connotation. Maybe she thinks you're trying to tell her something by buying her rough diamond jewelry. I think that best thing to do here is to sit her down and explain that you meant nothing by it and that you love her deeply which is why you bought her diamond jewelry in the first place. I think she'll appreciate your candor.

What?? Your girlfriend thought that rough diamond jewelry is offensive? That's so ignorant. Seems to me that she's being a little bit unappreciative… I'd absolutely flip if my boyfriend bought me jewelry set with rough diamonds. Ever since I saw a photograph of Kate Hudson wearing gorgeous rough diamond earrings at some red carpet shindig I've been obsessed with rough diamond jewelry. Tell her that she's a fool for reacting that way!

I seriously don't understand why ANYONE would be offended by rough diamonds. I mean, it's not like she's making a bold statement with the jewelry... maybe just a fashion statement!

Mmm I can see what your girlfriend is getting at. Rough diamond jewelry may be trendy right now but not every girl wants trendy, edgy jewelry. Some girls prefer to keep it simple and classical. I think that your girlfriend may be a little old school and she may be offended, not because you gave her rough diamonds, but rather because you didn't know her well enough not to! Just a thought..

I'm not sure why your girlfriend was so offended or why she thinks that rough diamonds aren't real. You should set her straight about rough diamonds and how trendy rough diamond jewelry has become and that you were only trying to get her some unique, beautiful diamond jewelry. She probably thinks that since rough diamonds don't look much like polished diamonds, (rough diamonds can sometimes look like regular stones) then they must not be real. Or maybe she's referring to the fact that rough diamonds don't come with a GIA or AGS approved certificate which guarantees a diamond's authentication. You could have her rough diamond jewelry appraised, just to put her mind at ease. An appraiser will tell her if the diamond jewelry is real or if it's fake. Maybe she just doesn't like the way the rough diamonds look…maybe she was expecting a big sparkly stone and was disappointed by a mundane looking gemstone. I don’t' believe that rough diamond jewelry is offensive in any way but you never know with girl, right?

That's a bad idea, having the rough diamonds cut down and polished. It would be much, much cheaper to just exchange the earrings. Cutting and polishing rough diamonds is a complicated and expensive process, which would require you sending her rough diamonds to a lab specializing in polishing diamonds. That won't be cheap! If she really hates the earrings simply exchange them.

You know what you could do… if you don’t' want to exchange her jewelry you could have the stones cut down and polished. I'm not sure what that would take exactly and whether it would be expensive but it's a great way of making it up to her, having her rough diamonds transformed into polished, sparkly ones.
