I was just wondering, does anyone know when CZ was actually discovered?

Yes. IN fact Cubic Zirconia was discovered around the year 1937 by 2 mineralogists named von Stackelberg and Chudoba. The zircon had these really tiny crystals which turned out to be zirconium oxide. meanwhile, the mineralogists didn't deem what they found in high regard, and that's why today we still call it cubic zirconia. i think that it was only around the 1970s did scientists figure out how to grow them in the lab. It was first marketed as djevalite and the metal became popular in the 1980's when a famous manufacturer of lead crystal began making cubic zirconia for the market.

From what I know, Zirconium dioxide, the natural mineral that is altered in order to create CZ, was discovered in 1937 by two German scientists named con Stackelberg and Chudoba. The zircon that they found actually contained tiny crystals within that they noticed. After doing some serious research using x-ray diffraction, the two discovered that the crystals were actually a cubic crystallized form of the natural mineral. They didn’t really know what to do with these results, and so didn’t rename the crystallized mineral. To this very day, it is still known as Cubic Zirconia. Well, even thought this strange crystal was discovered over half a century ago, only in the 1970s did scientists succeed in growing it in the lab. Finally, in 1977, Cubic Zirconium was introduced to the jewelry market as “Djevalite” but didn’t make too much of a splash. It wasn’t till the 1980s that Cubic Zirconium grew in popularity after Swarovski &Co began mass producing the stuff for ornamental jewelry and home decoration.
