I went to a jewelry store and the salespeople tried to sell me something they referred to as a "mystic diamond." this seemed awfully suspicious to me so I didn't buy anything from them. My friend said she thought they were trying to sell me cubic zirconia. Is the case? Is "mystic diamond" what the crooks are calling cubic zirconia?

They were indeed trying to sell you cubic zirconia. A"mystic diamond" is actually not a diamond at all. It is cubic zirconia covered with an ever-so-thin layer of metal - most commonly gold - which gives the stone a sort of iridescent look. this is one of the new methods used to try and mask cubic zirconia and make it hard to distinguish it from diamonds. This method was originally applied to other gems - namely topaz and quartz - and has more recently been applied to cubic zirconiz as well. Dealers call these gold coated cubic zirconia stones "mystic diamonds." But don't let them dupe you. They aren't real diamonds. Ususally these pieces of jewelry will be a lot cheaper than any diamonds you'll find anywhere, so be suspicious! Also, you should know that the cool "mystic" effect is not going to last for long. This is a layer of oxide which will eventually be come off the stone due to abrasion. No real diamond possesses that particular sort of mystic surreal look.Be careful of crooks.
