My girlfriend wants me to give her a big diamond engagement ring. She claims that the bigger the diamond I get her the more I show affection. Is this true? Or is a larger diamond merely a status symbol?

I don't think one should divide buying a diamond into romantic and 'show off' motives. Wearing a diamond engagement ring has both a status symbol and affection implications and there's nothing wrong about it. Clearly a diamond engagement ring should have a personal meaning, otherwise it's just a fancy stone, but we all like to show off occasionally, why not enjoy it?!

Bigger is not always better. Some people might think that a big diamond engagement ring is merely a status symbol since it may be more practical to have a smaller, high-quality engagement ring. In my opinion, it is the quality and shape of the diamond that matter, not the size. Anyone can buy a big diamond but only a person who cared about you would take the time to pick out an engagement ring that he thinks would be perfect for you.
