I am looking for a diamond engagement ring in brick and mortar stores. I have an engagement ring in mind, but I'm rather flexible. I don't have much experience in purchasing jewelry and I'm afraid I might get ripped off.

I would say that in addition to trusting your own intuition, you should ask the jeweler some questions to verify his credibility. Such questions might be - how long he has been in the diamond jewelry business? Does he have a GIA gemologist diploma (or does some other professional in the jewelry store possess such a document)? Needless to say, the diamond ring that offered by the jeweler should also be examined. It's also important to ask further questions about the piece of diamond jewelry itself, such as - Does the diamond come with a GIA or AGS certificate? Is there a full money back guarantee on the diamond?

You don't sound like a diamond expert so you could easily be fooled by jewelers. Furthermore, if you don't have an exact ring design in mind for your diamond engagement ring then I suggest you first go for the jeweler and later for the jewelry. Ask around, check online jewelry store reviews and find a jeweler who you feel you can trust, a jeweler with integrity. This shopping tactic has its short comings, you would have to limit yourself to the diamond engagement rings which the chosen jeweler offers and maybe you'll need to adapt your price range a bit, though generally speaking, choosing a jeweler first and an engagement ring later is the best approach if you want to avoid getting ripped off.
