I've noticed that some online jewelers offer show enlarged real images of the loose diamonds that they exhibit for sale. Are those trustworthy? They all look terrible to me...

When you say that pictures look terrible to you, what do you mean? There are a couple of things to consider when you are looking at an enlarged image. First, unless the website has done a good job of resizing images for enlarged views, enlarged images may appear to be ‘choppy’ because they are pixilated. If the diamond looks bad to you then it is most likely a bad quality photo, in which case it is probably not an accurate reflection of what the diamond actually looks like. Also, many websites use digital resources in order to make enlarged images look brighter than the smaller images. Diamonds are incredible stones, they are magnificent to the naked eye, but under a magnifying glass or even in an enlarged web image, they can sometimes look too good to be true. This is probably why you feel like you might not be able to trust them, but this is not the case. The diamond itself most likely looks just as brilliant in reality, it is only the fact that it is so large that may cause you to think you are looking at something fake. In fact, if you compared a 2 carat diamond with a 50 carat diamond, you would probably assume the bigger one was fake.
