There has certainly been a big change in the way political leaders displayed their wealth through jewelry in ancient times compared to the manner in which they express their status today. There was a time when jewelry functioned as the ultimate way to state one's power, however, those days are now long gone. It was the Egyptians that became incredibly skilled in the making of gold. Egyptian leaders were actually buried with their jewelry to ensure that their next life would be prosperous. In ancient Greece, jewelry, especially gemstone jewelry, was also worn to express prominence in society. European royalty has a long history of bejeweled crowns made by the most skilled jewelry professionals. However, as the years went on, political leaders have switched bejeweled crowns and robes with business suits. The role of jewelry has changed from functioning as emblems of power to simply serving as items of personal taste. These days, the only jewelry that retains its powerful status can be found medals of the armed forces. The significant adjustment in the function of jewelry is mainly a result of the social equality or democracy of western culture. Centuries ago, power was limited to royal families who expressed their power in golden crowns, bejeweled robes, and expensive jewelry in general. Now that power is transitory, no political leader in his right mind would arrive at an important political event wearing a golden crown and bejeweled robe, unless he was seeking impeachment. In modern day society, political leaders are expected to dress and accessorize in a way that is modest and tasteful. However, celebrities in the sports and entertainment industries are free to wear as much pricey, ostentatious jewelry as they please. In fact, their adoring public waits to see just what kind of jewelry they're wearing, as celebrities are major fashion icons.
