I know that diamonds are quite abundant in Africa and Canada, but I wish to know which country or countries actually have the highest number of natural diamonds. (Maybe I'll pack my bags and go on a diamond mining tour, instead of paying 3 months salary on a decent diamond engagement ring here:)) Are the most gem-grade diamonds and industrial diamonds found in the same countries?

The diamond mines in Botswana, Russia and South Africa are the most abundant in gem grade diamonds, which are used in jewelry. In fact, your diamond engagement ring may very well come from one of these mines. The diamond mines in South Africa, however, produce nearly all industrial grade diamonds, with very few jewelry grade diamonds.

You shouldn't consider the number of diamonds that are found in a country, but rather the total carat weight that is mined in a location. In addition, if you really want to know where diamonds are most abundant you have to divide the diamond carat weight found in a country by the size of the country. Then, you'll get the number of diamond carats for every square mile (probably a teeny tiny number).

Botswana is the country where diamonds are most abundant and mined constantly. Botswana is located in Southern Africa, north of South Africa, and is actually quite a stable country, as opposed to many of its neighboring nations. About 2.5 billion dollars worth of rough diamonds are mined in Botswana per year. Next on the list of countries where diamonds are abundant are Russia (1.6 billion dollar per year), South Africa (1.1 billion), and Canada (1 billion).
