I heard that Brown diamonds are really rare...that's why they haven't even been offered very often until recently. Is this true?

My friend told me this...she said she loves brown diamonds, but that she hasn't gotten any because they are so rare!

Whoa! That is so not true! Brown diamonds are the LEAST rare of fancy colored diamonds! In fact...until recently people didn't even think that they were worth putting in jewelry at all because they were considered a bad color for diamond jewelry. Even now that it has become stylish to make jewelry from brown diamonds, they are still the least expensive of ALL diamonds that exist. They are definitely less expensive than any other fancy colored diamond (those are all very expensive and mostly extremely rare) and they are also less expensive than white diamonds of the same clarity level...generally they are just really inexpensive in comparison to all diamonds. As far as newness, like I said...they are not very expensive but they are reasonably new in that no one wanted jewelry made from them in the past. They used to always be put to industrial use, and now with the recession and the upswing of the color creme in fashion, they have become trendy... It may be a little hard to find brown versions of every kind of diamond jewelry design you can get white diamonds in...but your friend really must be very mistaken if she thinks they are too rare to buy at all. If you want to look them up, they are often referred to as Champagne, Cognac, or Chocolate diamonds based on which shade of brown they are. These are just fancy terms for inexpensive brown diamonds, but they sure do sounds sweet and nice, right?

Ok... I'm not going to say that the above answer is wrong, because it isn't... but I do think it's really unfair to label brown diamonds in such a way as to make it look like they are less desirable than any other. They may be considered less valuable because of what the diamond industry has decided, but in reality they are some of the prettiest diamonds out there...and the jewelry that is made from them is really, really gorgeous. I wouldn't be so quick to put them down, because if I were to buy any diamond jewelry it would be made from "brown" diamonds. It's awesome, anyway, because you can buy them for pretty low prices, comparatively, because the world is so silly...and then you have a beautiful piece of jewelry with a gorgeous stone in it, and you weren't paying some ridiculously inflated rate just because of something people said about what the value of something is. It isn't like diamonds really have any true inherent value, anyway. They are just pieces of rock that you can put into useless pieces of jewelry. I'd say buy the diamond you think is beautiful, people, and then enjoy wearing it!
