I heard pink diamonds were the most expensive diamonds on earth, but I doubt that's true because I see a lot more pink diamonds on the market than other colors of diamonds, so I find it hard to believe that pink diamonds are the rarest variety of diamonds.

Though it is true that fancy colored diamonds can be more expensive than colorless diamonds (again, depending on their carat weight, their cut and the clarity), certain fancy colored diamonds are more costly than others. A fancy colored diamond's value is established according to a diamond's 4 C's (cut, color, clarity and carat weight) but is also contingent on other factors such as the intensity of the color, the color's purity and the color's popularity. Generally speaking, the more intense, or vivid, a diamond's color is, the higher its price will be. Fancy colored diamonds have a different color scale than colorless diamonds. While colorless diamonds range from D (colorless) to Z (colored), fancy colored diamonds range from Very Faint to Vivid. The higher a fancy colored diamond is on the color scale, the rarer it is and the more it'll cost. A fancy colored diamond's intensity isn't the only factor which determines its value, the purity of a diamond's color will greatly influence its cost. Most fancy colored diamonds come with a second, third, or even fourth tinge. A secondary tinge will devalue a fancy colored diamond, since, nowadays, customers prefer purer colors and tend to avoid fancy colored diamonds with secondary hues. Which bring us to popularity. A fancy colored diamond's value is also dependant on the color's popularity. For example, fancy colored pink diamonds became an immense hit after Jennifer Lopez was photographed with her pink diamond engagement ring, which caused fancy colored pink diamonds to rise in demand, thus resulting in an increase in this fancy colored diamond's price. Fancy colors that are considered trendy and 'in' will cost more than fancy colors, who may be a little rarer, but are not high in demand.

Overall, fancy colored diamonds are usually more expensive than colorless diamonds and blue diamonds are the most expensive fancy colored diamonds so I would have to say that blue diamonds are the most valuable diamonds. For instance, when comparing a fancy colored blue diamond of a single carat with a fancy colored yellow diamond of the same carat weight, the blue diamond will cost approximately $180,000 more than the yellow diamond. Of course there is always the option of steering clear of mined diamonds and opting for cultured diamonds. As opposed to mined diamonds, the cost of cultured diamonds produced in a laboratory is substantially lower. However, blue diamonds are still about 60% more expensive than yellow diamonds. It should be noted that cultured diamonds are not the same as artificial stones that simulate diamonds, such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Aside from the Chopard blue diamond ring, a rare cushion-cut 5 carat pink diamond is expected to break price records for a pink diamond when it goes up for auction in Hong Kong in December at Christie's. This incredible fancy colored diamond is expected to reel in between $5 and $7 million (currently the highest priced pink diamond, weighing 19.66 carats, sold for $7.4 million in Geneva in 1994).
