Should I have my rough diamond jewelry appraised?

I've heard somewhere that rough diamonds aren't as valuable as polished diamonds and, therefore, need not be appraised. Is that true? Should I have my rough diamonds appraised?

Certainly you should. First of all, rough diamonds are not necessarily cheaper than polished diamonds. True, polished diamonds are more in demand, and they require a great amount of careful work to fashion, however, a rough diamond can easily cost more than a polished diamond, depending on the diamond's 4 C's. For example, a rough diamond of an abnormally large carat weight can certainly be more valuable than a small sized polished diamond. A fancy colored rough can cost more than a low color grade polished stone and a rough with the potential to produce a fancy cut diamond will be more expensive than a poorly cut finished diamond. Having a rough diamond appraised is common practice. Look for a local appraiser or jeweler that has some experience in working with rough diamonds. A rough diamond appraisal should cost the same as a polished diamond appraisal so don't let the appraiser tell you differently. After you've had your rough diamond jewelry appraised, I suggest you have it insure against possible theft and damages. If your rough diamond jewelry turns out to be of little value then you can skip this step.
