Biodiversity is the term used to describe the many varieties of plants and animals in the world. Diamond mining is just one of the ways that man causes harm to biodiversity. This type of disturbance to the earth is done in many different environments all over the world as diamond mining is done everywhere from Africa to the United States. Trying to reduce the effect on the ecosystems begins from exploration and carries on through the actual diamond mining and even once the diamond mines have been shut. Once a diamond mining company comes to an area where it is going to do mine for diamonds, the plants around the area are reaped and the seeds of such plants are planted once again. In this manner, the native plants in the area suffer as little as possible from the diamond mining process. Diamond mining companies must work in collaboration with seed banks which work to research, collect and conserve seeds from plants all over the world. Locals are also hired by diamond mining companies to assist in the seeding process as well as additional restoration activities. Wildlife protection from diamond mining has been even more difficult to handle since many animals do not adapt well to change. So far, the best way the diamond mining companies have found to protect wildlife is to support and collaborate with national parks and wildlife conservation projects held to protect all species of animals potentially harmed by diamond mining – from fish to antelope. Despite all the efforts to prevent, reduce, and repair damage caused by diamond mining, some damage is irreparable. Nevertheless, one thing's for sure – with time, man is becoming more aware of his detrimental effects on the environment and trying to make changes for the better. That's got to count for something!
