I saw something at an auction house called a carbonado rough diamond, but it didn't look like much of a diamond to me at all. Is it even a real diamond or is it just called that?

A carbonado rough diamond is a rough black diamond. Carbonado is another term for black diamond. Why is there another word for it? Well, black diamond actually has a different crystalline structure than other dimaonds. It is the hardest and most dense diamond out there. To be honest, carbonado rough diamond is pretty ugly. It looks like charred rock or charcoal. In order for it to have any kind of aesthetic shine or shimmer, it MUST be cut and polished. Many fashionistas like the idea of black diamond, since it offers men a way to don a diamond that isn't sparkly and delicate, but others bemoan the introduction of black diamond jewelry in general.

I'm not sure about the exact definition, but I have heard that a Carbonado rough diamond has been offered for auction. Scientist claim that this rough diamond reached earth when a meteor hit the planet many ages ago, back when Africa and South America were still connected. I'm not sure how many pieces of Carbonado diamond are offered for sale but it seems like a cool item, especially if you are into geology and natural history. Maybe one day carbonados will be worth millions of dollars, and maybe they'll be worthless, who knows.
