My husband bought me a diamond engagement ring in Europe, and it came with a diamond certificate from something called the HRD. I've never heard of it before. Is it legit?

It sure doesn't sound very trustworthy...All of the diamond jewelry that I own came with diamond certificates from the GIA, and I didn't even know that there was such thing as a certificate from a different institution.

HRD stands for the Hoge Raad Voor (in English, the Diamond High Council), and it is based in Antwerp, Belgium, the diamond capital of the world. I would say a diamond certificate from HRD is pretty reliable, and should be accepted by pretty much anyone. The HRD is not a for-profit institution, which already makes it more trustworthy. It services the Belgian diamond trade for the most part, so many diamonds and diamond jewelry purchased in Europe might come with a diamond certificate from the HRD.
