What are some of the things that would make buying an estate diamond for personal use more desirable than just buying a normal diamond from a store?

Hey! You stole the words straight from under my fingers! That's exactly how I feel, environmentally. My fiance Dan made my engagement ring out of really gorgeous reclaimed gold, and the diamond is a yellow diamond which he bought from an old estate...and it was old enough that I could feel totally sure that it wasn't supporting recent diamond mining in places where everyone is taken advantage of and it hurts the environment. He actually set the stone in the center of a circle of tiny rough-cut turquoise stones that were collected from near our house here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It's such a beautiful and unique ring, and it's so utterly gorgeous...and it's especially nice that he thought so hard about how to make it environmentally viable and worth having made. I hope that my grandchildren also enjoy this ring, and that it's in our family for many generations (assuming the world lasts long enough for all of them to do the things Dan and I love to do so much (like hiking, camping, biking, living, and experiencing...).

My boyfriend bought me a really beautiful old fashioned diamond from an old estate so that he could set a really classic looking ring that he designed using rose gold and tiny, tiny little saphires. It is so beautiful, and I especially love it because I'm really into antiques, so for me to have an older diamond with a little history is so much cooler than to buy some recently mined diamond that I have no idea about. Also, if it's a really old diamond you know you aren't supporting modern-day conflict diamond stuff, or the parts of the diamond industry that are destructive to the environment...you're just buying a beautiful diamond to enjoy and it doesn't have anything to do with all that stuff. It's great.
