I'm a woman and I want to propose to my boyfriend. Yes I know it's not traditional. What I want to know is, should I get him an engagement ring?

What kind of engagement ring do you get a man? Since I'm already making a kind of aggressive move in proposing to my boyfriend instead of waiting until he proposes to me, I don't want to further emasculate him by getting him some girly floral diamond engagement ring. What are my options?

I see no reason why you shouldn't propose to your boyfriend. So what if it's a little unconventional? I say more power to you! You can even get down on one knee when you're doing it, that way you mix in a little of the traditional with the unconventionality of a woman proposing to a man. As for an engagement ring, I'm not sure your boyfriend would want to wear one. I'd go for something a little more practical, for example, an elegant wristwatch. You can always incorporate diamonds into the watch's face. That way, it'll still resemble the idea of a diamond engagement ring but you don't run the risk of him not wanting to wear a watch. If you're sure tour boyfriend is willing to wear an engagement ring then perhaps you should go for something a little more low key and propose with a plain banded engagement ring (which isn't set with any gemstones) or an engagement ring set with black diamonds, which are often used in men's jewelry since most men feel that black diamonds are a little more masculine than colorless diamonds. On the other hand, if he's not a jewelry kind of guy, consider instead diamond encrusted cell phone casings, diamond embedded money clips or a diamond set belt buckle.

Well I hope you've thought this out well. A lot of men I know probably would be pretty traumatized and emasculated if their girlfriends popped the question, especially if they pulled out a diamond engagement ring afterwards. Although it's a hard move to make, shopping for a diamond engagement ring and proposing to their woman is quite an experience for men, which helps them really think through their plans to marry and come to terms with such a serious life-changing decision. Some men might be upset to have that taken away from them. But I guess you know your man better than I do so you know what you're doing. When buying a men's ring, i don't think a diamond is a must. A simple gold, silver or platinum band should probably suffice.

Wow you go girl! But as long as you're going for unconventional, why get him an engagement ring? Get him something he'll actually really like, that costs about the same as a ring. Even better, get him something that you can both enjoy together, like a motorcycle (with a back seat for you) or a vacation for two to some romantic destination you both want to visit. Maybe a downpayment on a camper if you guys are into camping, or a top-of-the-line bicycle. Whatever it is, you're the one who knows him best, so i'm sure you can figure out something that would pleasantly surprise him. Good luck, lady :) You're an inspiration.

Respect! I think it's great that you're going for what you want. However, getting down on one knee and pulling out a diamond ring does seems a bit inappropriate and even controlling. Although women have become accustomed to the idea over generations, men might not like the possessive undertones that wearing an engagement ring imply. Why don't you think of something else you can get for him? Something fun and extravagant instead of an engagement ring, that he would really enjoy. NOT something for the house, like a TV or computer. That's just too domestic. Think of what he's into - or what he'd like to be into if he had the time and money. If your man is outdoorsy and you live near a lake or river, how about a sailboat or a canoe? Fancy gold clubs? A new electric guitar? Let go of the ring idea though.
