Why are anniversaries given gemstone names (like ruby and diamond anniversaries)? Does it mean the couple exchanges rubies and diamonds on their anniversary?

There are a few recommended gift lists for anniversaries by year, although they aren't mandatory and you should go with what you think your wife would like best. The Traditional 5th Anniversary gift is things made from wood, though knowing you you'd probably get her a stack of firewood. Don't do it!!! The Contemporary 5th Anniversary gift is things made from silver. Like I said though, there's no law saying you have to stick to these arbitrary traditions. If you want ideas, any sort of jewelry makes a great anniversary gift. Diamond earrings, promise rings and diamond pendant necklaces are a few ideas. If you really want to go with the silver thing, check out some silver charm bracelets, or sterling silver earrings set with gemstones. Go visit a local jeweler and have him make you some more recommendations.

That's exactly the reason. As far as tradition goes, ruby embedded jewelry is usually exchanged on ruby anniversaries and diamond jewelry is presented on diamond anniversaries. This is of course not always the case, but I do find that old-fashioned couples prefer to stick with the tradition.
